Service model & trust boundary
This guide treats VPN gateways, remote-access portals, and administrative access brokers as a control boundary rather than a list of attack commands. First document who owns it, who should reach it, what identity context applies, and which data or downstream systems it can affect.
- Confirmed asset owner and in-scope address or application.
- Expected clients, identities, and network zones.
- Protocol versions, encryption expectations, and authentication mode.
- Sensitive data classes and downstream dependencies.
- Monitoring owner, escalation contact, and agreed stop threshold.
Discovery & baseline
- 01
Map gateways, identity providers, client types, user populations, and reachable zones.
- 02
Record MFA, device posture, certificate, and recovery requirements.
- 03
Identify split-tunnel policy and DNS handling.
- 04
Define designated users and managed test devices.
Controlled validation
A useful result demonstrates a broken security expectation with a reversible, low-impact test. Scanner labels and version matches are leads; validate the actual control and preserve the clean baseline beside the changed request.
- 01
Verify denied and allowed access with designated user and device states.
- 02
Confirm privileged administration uses a stronger isolated path.
- 03
Test session termination after account disablement and posture loss.
- 04
Review client configuration distribution and update integrity.

STOP / CLEANUP STATUS:- Monitor enrollment, authentication, posture failures, geography, impossible travel, and concurrent sessions.
- Alert on configuration changes and new gateways.
- Correlate remote access with endpoint and identity telemetry.
Keep raw data only when it is necessary to reproduce the finding. Redact credentials, session values, customer content, internal addresses, and personal data before evidence enters a ticket or report.
Remediation & retest
- Require phishing-resistant MFA for privileged access.
- Apply device posture and least-privilege segmentation.
- Use short sessions and prompt revocation.
- Harden recovery, client updates, and administrative interfaces.
