Service model & trust boundary

This guide treats business workflows, state machines, quotas, and high-value transactions as a control boundary rather than a list of attack commands. First document who owns it, who should reach it, what identity context applies, and which data or downstream systems it can affect.

  • Confirmed asset owner and in-scope address or application.
  • Expected clients, identities, and network zones.
  • Protocol versions, encryption expectations, and authentication mode.
  • Sensitive data classes and downstream dependencies.
  • Monitoring owner, escalation contact, and agreed stop threshold.

Discovery & baseline

  1. 01

Diagram actors, states, transitions, preconditions, side effects, and compensating actions.

  2. 02

Define invariants such as ownership, balance, quantity, approval, and sequence.

  3. 03

Create synthetic accounts and reversible test records.

  4. 04

Agree on concurrency and transaction limits before race testing.

03

Controlled validation

A useful result demonstrates a broken security expectation with a reversible, low-impact test. Scanner labels and version matches are leads; validate the actual control and preserve the clean baseline beside the changed request.

  1. 01

Attempt approved transitions out of order.

  2. 02

Repeat idempotent actions and compare side effects.

  3. 03

Test boundary values and cross-channel consistency.

  4. 04

Use low, controlled concurrency only in an isolated or explicitly approved environment.

Evidence & detection

  • Log state transitions, invariant failures, duplicate operations, and compensating actions.
  • Alert on impossible sequences and repeated high-value failures.
  • Correlate API, queue, payment, and audit identifiers.

Keep raw data only when it is necessary to reproduce the finding. Redact credentials, session values, customer content, internal addresses, and personal data before evidence enters a ticket or report.

05

Remediation & retest

  • Enforce invariants server-side at the transaction boundary.
  • Use idempotency keys and atomic state changes.
  • Require authorization at every transition.
  • Add abuse cases and concurrency tests to release criteria.
